What does a vacation rental bathroom need?
Short answer
A vacation rental bathroom needs towels for every guest, a bath mat, hand towels, toilet paper, hand soap, shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Add a plunger, toilet brush, small trash can, hair dryer and a spare roll of toilet paper. Plan towel counts by guests and bathrooms, with extra sets in the laundry and on the shelf.
The basics
Each bathroom needs three things: enough towels, the basic toiletries guests expect and the tools to handle small problems without calling you.
Towels: count by guests and bathrooms
Plan towels in cycles. One cycle is in use, one is in the laundry and one is spare. If your laundry is off-site or done by a linen service, plan two in the laundry. These are editable planning assumptions, not a standard.
| Item | How to count |
|---|---|
| Bath towels | Max guests × cycles |
| Washcloths | Max guests × cycles |
| Hand towels | Bathrooms × 2 × cycles |
| Bath mats | Full bathrooms × cycles |
A half bath with no shower still needs hand towels but no bath mat.
A worked example
Hypothetical rental: 4 guests, 1 full bathroom and 1 half bath, laundry on-site, so 3 cycles.
- Bath towels: 4 × 3 = 12
- Washcloths: 4 × 3 = 12
- Hand towels: 2 bathrooms × 2 × 3 = 12
- Bath mats: 1 full bathroom × 3 = 3
With off-site laundry, the cycles go to 4, so bath towels become 16. The linen calculator does this for your layout.
Toiletries
- Toilet paper: rolls on the holder plus at least two spares in plain view
- Hand soap at the sink
- Shampoo, conditioner and body wash, in refillable dispensers or small bottles
- Tissues
- Optional: makeup remover wipes, which help protect white towels
Tools and comfort items
- Plunger and toilet brush next to each toilet
- Small trash can with a lid and liners
- Hair dryer
- Mirror and good lighting
- Hooks or a towel bar for every guest
- Shower curtain or a clean glass door, plus a non-slip mat or strips for the tub
Make the plunger easy to find. A guest who cannot find one at night will message you, and the problem may get worse while they wait.
Cleaning and restock routine
- Replace all used towels and the bath mat at every turnover.
- Refill soap and shampoo before they drop below a quarter full.
- Leave the same number of toilet paper rolls every time.
- Check towels for stains or thinning as you fold them, and pull worn ones from rotation.

Build my turnover checklistFrequently asked questions
How many towels does a vacation rental bathroom need?
Plan bath towels at your maximum guests times your number of towel cycles. With on-site laundry and one spare cycle, that is 3 bath towels per guest.
Do I need a bath mat for a half bathroom?
No. Bath mats are for bathrooms with a shower or tub. A half bath needs hand towels, soap, toilet paper and a trash can.
What toiletries should a short-term rental provide?
Most hosts provide toilet paper, hand soap, shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Small extras such as tissues and makeup remover wipes are helpful but optional.
Should a rental bathroom have a plunger?
Yes. Keep a plunger next to each toilet so guests can fix a minor clog without waiting for you.
