Wi-Fi sign with QR code

Type your network name and password once. You get a QR code guests scan with their phone camera to join, on a sign you can print at Letter size or as a 4×6 card.

Your Wi-Fi

Starting values · saves when you edit

Exactly as it appears in a phone's Wi-Fi list, capitals included.

Security

Not sure? It's almost always WPA/WPA2/WPA3. Pick WEP only for a very old router, None for an open network.

Headline and note

Your password stays in this browser; the code is made on your device.

Test it before you print. Point your phone's camera at the code on this screen. If it offers to join your network, the printout will work too.
What's inside the code

The standard Wi-Fi text phone cameras read. Special characters get a backslash.

Fill in the network details first.

How it works

How the Wi-Fi sign maker works

The QR code holds one line of text in the format phone cameras read: WIFI:, then the security type (T), the network name (S), the password (P) and, for a hidden network, H:true. A backslash, semicolon, comma, colon or double quote in the name or password gets a backslash in front, so the phone doesn't read it as a separator. The code is drawn in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

  • WIFI:T:security;S:network name;P:password;;
  • Put a backslash before \ ; , : and " in the name and password

A worked example

A WPA2 network named “Cedar;Guest” with the password “calm:waters,42”.

What goes into the code
Security (T)Right for WPA, WPA2 and WPA3WPA
Network name (S)The semicolon gets a backslashCedar\;Guest
Password (P)So do the colon and the commacalm\:waters\,42
Hidden (H)Added as H:true only for a hidden networkLeft out
Text in the codeWIFI:T:WPA;S:Cedar\;Guest;P:calm\:waters\,42;;

46 characters. Without the backslashes a phone would stop the name at the semicolon and fail to join. For a hidden network the text ends ;H:true;;.

What it doesn't do

  • It can't check that the password is right. Scan the code on screen with your phone before you print.
  • It doesn't change your router. If the name or password changes, make a new sign.
  • It doesn't post the sign online or send it anywhere. Print it, save a PDF or download the code as an image.

Questions hosts ask

How do guests use a Wi-Fi QR code?

They open the phone's camera, point it at the code and tap the prompt to join. iPhones and most Android phones do this from the camera app, with no extra app needed.

Is it safe to put the Wi-Fi password on a sign?

Anyone who can see the sign can join, the same as a password written on a card. Many hosts give guests a separate guest network and change its password now and then, then print a new sign. The code is made on your device, so the password isn't sent to us.

Which security type should I pick?

WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for almost every router. The setting is on your router's label or admin page. Pick None only for an open network with no password.

Can I use the code in my own design or guidebook?

Yes. Download it as a PNG or SVG and add it to a framed card, your own design or a digital guidebook such as Touch Stay.
