Checkout sign maker

Keep checkout light: lock up, lights off, keys back. Print a sign with the requests already in your listing, then copy the matching message for the evening before checkout.

One per line. Ask, don't require: for Airbnb reservations booked on or after Nov 20, 2026, hosts generally can't ask guests to strip the bed, take trash offsite or wash and put away dishes.

Add a light request

The kinds of requests Airbnb's checkout guide (opens in a new tab) describes (checked Nov 2, 2026). Edit the wording above to fit your home.

No need to clean beyond this. We'll take care of the rest.

Thank you for staying with us!

Print only what your listing already asks. For reservations booked on or after Nov 20, 2026, Airbnb's Reasonable house rules and requests policy (opens in a new tab) says hosts may not communicate new rules or requests after booking, “including by message, signs in the home, or in person” (checked Nov 2, 2026). Put these requests in your listing's house rules section first. What you can still ask at checkout

The matching message

Send it the evening before checkout. It repeats the requests on the sign, word for word. Tips and timing: checkout reminder message template.

Fill these in first (3 left). Every message reuses them.

How it works

How the checkout sign maker works

The sign is built from the checkout time and checkout requests saved with your rental, the same lines your house manual and checkout reminder message use. Requests a cleaner would normally do are flagged, and the matching message below repeats the sign word for word.

Hypothetical example

A host whose old list asks guests to lock the door behind you, turn off the lights, strip the beds and put the keys back where you found them.

What goes on the sign
Lock the door behind youA light requestOn the sign
Turn off the lightsA light requestOn the sign
Strip the bedsAirbnb's policy names stripping the bedFlagged
Put the keys back where you found themA light requestOn the sign
Requests on the sign3

The maker flags stripping the bed so you can move it to your cleaner's list. 3 light requests stay, well under the 6 the sign fits.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't change your listing. Put the same requests in your listing's house rules section first; the sign only repeats them.
  • It can't tell whether Airbnb will grant an exception for your area. Airbnb decides that from the listing's context.
  • It doesn't post the sign or send the message. Print the sign and copy the message into your platform's inbox.

Questions hosts ask

What can I put on an Airbnb checkout sign?

Only requests already in your listing, and only light ones. For reservations booked on or after Nov 20, 2026, Airbnb's Reasonable house rules and requests policy (opens in a new tab) says hosts may not communicate new rules or requests after booking, including by signs in the home, and generally can't ask guests to strip the bed, take trash offsite or wash and put away dishes (checked Nov 2, 2026).

Which checkout requests are light?

Airbnb's own checkout guide, A clear and simple checkout (opens in a new tab), says hosts can require guests to lock up and say where to return keys, and gives "please turn off lights when you leave" as a request (checked Nov 2, 2026). The one-tap requests here are those three: lock up, lights off and keys back.

Can the sign say there's a fee if guests skip a task?

No. The policy says hosts may not impose fines or other penalties, and Airbnb's additional fees page (opens in a new tab) says hosts should not charge fees or penalties for failing to do cleaning or checkout tasks (checked Nov 2, 2026).

Do I still need a checkout message?

Airbnb's checkout guide says it automatically sends guests your checkout time and instructions. A short reminder the evening before is optional; the checkout reminder template below the sign uses the same requests, so the two never disagree.
