How many towels do you need for 9 guests?
Short answer
For 9 guests with laundry done on site, plan on 27 bath towels, 18 hand towels, 27 washcloths and 9 bath mats: one set in use, one in the wash and one spare. With off-site laundry or a linen service, plan on 36 bath towels, 24 hand towels and 36 washcloths.

Nine guests is the first size our model gives three bathrooms, and the first where towels alone overflow one washer load. Homes this size usually add a bunk room, so several guests are kids or teens sharing a room. Our sample is a 4-bedroom home with 3 bathrooms: a King bed, two Queen beds, two Twin beds and a Twin sofa bed. The math: 9 guests × 3 cycles gives 27 bath towels and 27 washcloths; 3 bathrooms × 2 × 3 gives 18 hand towels, plus 9 bath mats.
| Item | On-site laundry (3 cycles) | Off-site or linen service (4 cycles) | Cost on site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bath towels | 27 | 36 | $215.73 |
| Hand towels | 18 | 24 | $89.82 |
| Washcloths | 27 | 36 | $34.93 |
| Bath mats | 9 | 12 | $89.91 |
| Total | 81 | 108 | $430.39 |
Beds for 9 guests
A King bed, two Queen beds, two Twin beds and a Twin sofa bed in 4 bedrooms take 18 sheet sets with laundry on site. The 9th guest brings 3 bath towels and 3 washcloths, and our model's third bathroom brings 6 hand towels and 3 mats on top: $88.87 more than for 8. Towels also stop fitting in one load.
| Beds | Sheet sets | Other pieces | Cost |

| Twin sofa bed | 3 | 4 | $149.93 |

Turnover laundry and closet space
Each turnover washes 9 bath towels, 9 washcloths, 6 hand towels and 3 mats: 15 lb, 2 loads. Bedding adds 25.1 lb, washed apart from towels. In all, 5 loads take about 6 hours on one washer and dryer, 1 hour past a 4 pm check-in, so the spare set goes out while the rest dries.
Clean spares fill 8½ shelves of a 24 in closet: 54 towels and mats, 12 sheet sets and their covers.
Planning weights, dry: bath towel 0.9 lb (VÅGSJÖN specs), King set 3 lb, Queen set 2.5 lb, Twin set 1.5 lb; 12 lb per load in a 4.5 cu ft washer.
Adjust for your rental
What changes the count
- Laundry off site keeps a set away, which adds a fourth cycle: 27 more pieces for 9 guests (36 bath towels in place of 27).
- With 2 bathrooms instead of 3, 9 guests need 12 hand towels and 6 mats; the 27 bath towels stay, because they follow guests.
- Bunk-room guests have no bathroom of their own. A hook per bunk shows the cleaner which towels were used and which are still folded.
Frequently asked questions
What if my 9-guest home has 2½ bathrooms?
Enter 2.5 bathrooms. A half bath has a sink, so it still gets hand towels, but no shower, so no bath mat: 18 hand towels and 6 bath mats on site. Bath towels and washcloths stay at 27.
Why does 9 guests mean three bathrooms?
It's a planning assumption: 1 bathroom up to 4 guests, 2 up to 8 and 3 above that. Only hand towels and mats depend on it, so enter your real count in the calculator and those two lines adjust.
