How many towels do you need for 4 guests?

For 4 guests with laundry done on site, plan on 12 bath towels, 6 hand towels, 12 washcloths and 3 bath mats: one set in use, one in the wash and one spare. With off-site laundry or a linen service, plan on 16 bath towels, 8 hand towels and 16 washcloths.

Four guests is a family of four or two couples, and the largest group our model puts in one bathroom. One bathroom shared by four people gets busy in the morning, and the hand towels are what run out first. Our sample is a one-bedroom with one bathroom: a Queen bed and a Full sofa bed. The math: 4 guests × 3 cycles gives 12 bath towels and 12 washcloths; 1 bathroom × 2 × 3 gives 6 hand towels, plus 3 bath mats.

Turnover laundry and closet space
Each turnover washes 4 bath towels, 4 washcloths, 2 hand towels and 1 mat: 6 lb, 1 load. Bedding adds 8.7 lb, washed apart from towels. In all, 2 loads take about 3 hours on one washer and dryer, 2 hours inside an 11 am to 4 pm turnover.
Clean spares fill 3½ shelves of a 24 in closet: 22 towels and mats, 4 sheet sets and their covers.

What changes the count
- Laundry off site keeps a set away, which adds a fourth cycle: 11 more pieces for 4 guests (16 bath towels in place of 12).
- This is the last count with one bathroom in our model. A second one adds 6 hand towels and 3 mats, which is most of the jump to 5 guests.
- Four people on one bathroom go through hand towels fastest. Put a third one out from the spare cycle; it doesn't change what you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't hand towels go up from 3 to 4 guests?
Hand towels follow bathrooms, not guests: 2 per bathroom in each cycle, so 6 for one bathroom. Bath towels and washcloths go up by 3 with each guest.
Should beach or pool towels count here?
No. Kids especially take bath towels to the pool, which is a reason to stock beach towels as their own line, not to raise the bath-towel count. Beach towels are bigger and dry slower, so wash them as a separate load.
