What cleaning supplies does a vacation rental need?

Short answer

Keep the tools on site so any cleaner can turn the home over: a vacuum, a mop, a broom and dustpan, and about 24 microfiber cloths in colors that keep kitchen and bathroom apart. Then stock what gets used up, counted per stay: 1 new sponge, 1 kitchen bag a night plus 1, a fresh liner in each bathroom bin, and about 1 laundry pod per 2 guests plus 1 for towels.

When the supplies live in the rental, any cleaner can do the turnover without bringing their own kit. That matters most the day your regular cleaner is sick. A locked owner's closet or a labeled bin keeps it all together.

Tools that stay in the rental

ToolHow manyNote
Vacuum1A light stick vacuum is enough for hard floors and small rugs
Mop and bucket1Spare mop heads let the cleaner start each turnover with a clean one
Broom and dustpan1For porches, entries and quick sweeps
Microfiber cloths24Use one color for the kitchen and another for the bathroom so they don't cross over
Laundry baskets1 per bedroomCarry sheets out in one trip
Linen cart or bin1Clean sets on one side, dirty on the other

What gets used up, counted per stay

Our planner works these out from the restock calculator's planning rates, for the number of guests:

SupplyPlanning rate4 guests, 3 nights
Sponges1 new sponge per stay1
Kitchen trash bags1 a night + 1 at check-in4
Bathroom bin liners1 per bathroom per stay1
Paper towels0.1 roll per guest per night + half a roll a stay2
Laundry pods (on-site laundry)1 per 2 guests + 1 for towels3

To open, stock 5 stays' worth and reorder when 2 stays' worth is left. The restock list has the full table, including toilet paper, soap and coffee.

Make the cleaner's job repeatable

  1. One caddy, always refilled. A caddy with the sprays, cloths and a scrub brush goes room to room, and nothing gets left behind.
  2. A written checklist for each room. HostCalmly's turnover checklist builds one from your rooms and beds, and you can send it to the cleaner as a link.
  3. A photo at the end. Ask for one photo of each bed and bathroom. It's quicker than a call and settles any damage question.
  4. Restock before you run out. Put "restock below 2 stays" on the closet door.

Frequently asked questions

Should the host or the cleaner supply cleaning products?

Either works, but agree on it in writing. When you supply them, the products are the same at every turnover, and you control the scent and what's safe on your surfaces.

How many microfiber cloths does a rental need?

About 24, enough for a full turnover plus a second set washing. Two or three colors keep kitchen, bathroom and glass cloths apart.

What's the minimum cleaning kit for a studio?

A small vacuum, a mop, a broom and dustpan, a dozen microfiber cloths, sponges, trash bags and an all-purpose cleaner. The checklist adds what your rooms need.
