How does Airbnb decide where my listing shows in search?
Short answer
Airbnb says its algorithm weighs quality (photos, reviews, ratings), popularity (wishlist saves, bookings, messages), price compared with similar nearby listings, location, availability and booking settings like Instant Book. It says price has a large impact, and listings priced below comparable ones tend to rank higher. Airbnb does not publish the formula or the weights, so nobody outside Airbnb can promise you a ranking.
Airbnb publishes a plain-language list of what its search algorithm looks at, and it's shorter and less mysterious than most ranking advice suggests. What it doesn't publish is how those factors are weighted or combined. This page sticks to what Airbnb itself has said, mainly its help article How search results work (opens in a new tab), read on Nov 4, 2026. HostCalmly is not affiliated with Airbnb and can't promise any ranking result.
The factors Airbnb publishes
Airbnb says the algorithm considers many factors and that some have a larger impact than others. It names these:
| Factor | What Airbnb says it looks at |
|---|---|
| Quality | Photos and videos, ratings and reviews, host and guest messages on Airbnb, listing characteristics, customer service, cancellations and amenities |
| Popularity | Wishlist saves, bookings and messages to the host |
| Price | Total price, and how it compares with similar listings in the area for the same dates |
| Location | Places guests like to stay, such as near popular landmarks |
| Host reliability | The Superhost criteria (cancellations, responsiveness, ratings and reviews) |
| Booking method | Instant Book listings may rank higher. Otherwise, response speed and how often you reject requests |
| Variety | A mix of hosts, characteristics and prices in each set of results |
Two more inputs come from the guest, not you. Results depend on the guest's search (location, dates, number of guests and pets, filters and the map). Airbnb also personalizes results using what it knows about each guest. If a guest's past bookings share characteristics, similar listings may rank higher for them. That means two people searching the same dates can see a different order, and your own search is not a reliable test of your rank.
What you control
Airbnb's article lists four things hosts can do. Here they are with the setting behind each.
Price
Airbnb's article says price has "a large impact on search results," and adjusting price or offering discounts is one of the most direct ways to affect performance. It also says listings priced below comparable listings in the area tend to rank higher. Airbnb's older Resource Center article on search (opens in a new tab) describes that total as the price before taxes, including fees and discounts, so your cleaning fee counts, not just the nightly rate.
Before you cut your rate, know your floor. Our Airbnb fee calculator shows what a guest pays and what you keep, and the break-even rate calculator shows the lowest rate that still covers your costs. Ranking higher at a loss isn't a win.
Availability and trip length
Airbnb says more open dates make a listing more likely to match a guest's plans, so adding availability may improve visibility. More flexibility on minimum and maximum stay length helps for the same reason. If you block weekdays or require long minimums, you'll show up in fewer searches. Our one-night stays answer covers that trade-off.
Photos, description and amenities
Airbnb points to high-quality photos and videos, a thorough description and sought-after amenities. Guests can filter by amenities, and Airbnb says these details can improve visibility in filtered searches. Go through your listing's amenity list and make sure everything the home has is checked.
Hospitality and booking settings
Airbnb says to respond quickly, limit cancellations and consider Instant Book. For listings that aren't instantly bookable, the algorithm looks at how fast you respond and how often you reject booking requests. These are the same habits behind Superhost. See Superhost and Guest Favorite requirements.
Quality over time
Ratings and reviews are part of quality, and they build slowly. Clean, accurate, well-explained stays are the input you can affect. Our house manual and check-in message reduce the confusion that leads to lower check-in and communication ratings.
What Airbnb says about new listings
Airbnb says the algorithm is designed to help new listings appear in search, and new listings usually show up in results within 24 hours, though some take longer. If your listing doesn't appear after a day, check that the calendar is open and the listing is published before assuming a ranking problem.
What Airbnb has not published
Be clear on the limits of what's public:
- The weights. Airbnb says some factors matter more than others, and names price as having a large impact. It does not say how much any factor counts.
- The formula. There is no published scoring method, cutoff or rank number you can look up.
- A list of things that don't matter. Airbnb's help article doesn't list non-factors. Claims like "editing your listing every day boosts you" or "logging in daily helps" are not something Airbnb has published, either way.
- Paid promotion details. Airbnb's Terms of Service (opens in a new tab) (last updated Feb 5, 2026, section 5.3) say Airbnb may let hosts promote listings by paying an additional fee. The terms don't explain how paid promotion affects position.
- Future changes. Airbnb says its ranking algorithms will evolve over time.
One older Airbnb page is worth knowing about. Its Resource Center article on search (last updated Nov 21, 2022) said the algorithm considered whether you were a Superhost. The current help article says it considers the Superhost criteria, not the badge itself. The help article is the newer source.
Be wary of ranking promises
Because the weights and formula aren't public, no one outside Airbnb can promise you a specific position, a first-page placement or a ranking boost. That includes software vendors, consultants and course sellers. What they can do is help you with the factors Airbnb publishes: price, availability, listing content and responsiveness. If someone guarantees a ranking, ask them to show you where Airbnb says it works that way.
A short checklist
- Compare your total price, with fees, against similar listings for the same dates.
- Open more dates and loosen minimum nights where you can.
- Check that every amenity you have is listed.
- Replace dark or outdated photos and make sure they match the home today.
- Answer messages and requests within 24 hours.
- Consider Instant Book, with house rules that set expectations.
- Avoid host cancellations.
